Photo Day Out 2021

My first photography days out in over 1.5 years.I was lucky enough to have my first day out with Mike, we headed off to Snowdonia National Park north Wales, one of our favourite photographic locations an hour away, unfortunately the weather wasn’t as good as the forecast predicted with low cloud staying around the mountain most of the day, we had to work at trying to get some good shots with Mike driving us to different locations. Thank you Mike for all the driving.

My second day out the following week the weather was actually very nice and made the photography easier.
Often the bad weather actually makes for a more interesting photo.

I have included some of the shot of both days.

Day 1

Some old ruins and wonderful trees near the old roman road leading past Pentre Farm, Nant Ffrancon valley Snowdonia
Yup the intrepid photographer mike climbs up the river bank near Cwm Idwal, a very popular attraction for visitors interested in walking, climbing, fishing and geology.

Day 2

Dolbadarn Castle is a fortification built by the Welsh prince Llywelyn the Great during the early 13th century, at the base of the Llanberis Pass. The castle was important both militarily and as a symbol of Llywelyn’s power and authority. The castle features a large stone keep, which historian Richard Avent considers the finest surviving example of a Welsh round tower.

Dolbadarn Castle panorama including the town of Llanberis and edge padarn lake
Anglesey Barracks in Dinorwic Quarry, comprised two rows of 11 dwellings, served as accommodation for quarrymen, they would spend the week based in the barracks working in the quarry, leaving their homes very early on Monday morning and returning Saturday afternoon. Conditions were spartan. Each two-room unit had a living area with a fireplace and a sleeping area for four men. Facilities were scant no running water, toilets or electricity. Public-health inspectors closed down these barracks in 1948.
The Dinorwic quarry is a large former slate quarry was once the second largest slate quarry in the world, located between the villages of Llanberis and Dinorwig in North Wales Backdrop is Snowdon the highest mountain in Wales, has been described as – probably the busiest mountain in Britain. It is designated as a national nature reserve for its rare flora and fauna.

Photo Day Out Summer 2021

Headed off to Snowdonia National Park north Wales again, one of our favourite photographic locations an hour away as I’m happy to wonder around there on my own, getting some fresh air and exercise while searching for a good image.

Day 1 found me heading towards Dyffryn Ogwen or Ogwen Valley Snowdonia north Wales to a bucket list location i have been meaning to go to for a few years, a steady walk up the mountain stopping off for images took me about an hour, on the way up met a nice walker taking some photos called Phil and on the slow walk down I nearly walked into some beautiful wild mountain ponies, fortunately they are used to people and got close looking for a snack.

Day 2 was another bucket list location in Snowdonia. A partially hidden waterfall on the Afon Ogwen below Llyn Ogwen Snowdonia National Park, Wales, UK

I have been around this area for years but never ventured down to the base of the waterfall, I’m glad I did as this is now another favourite location even though it was busy with other photographers on that day.

As i was near Cwm Idwal I decided to head to the wooden foot bridge which is always a wonderful location especially if the river is flowing well.

Having managed to miss Autumn with bad weather and lack of motivation to find new photo locations, here are a some of the Digital Art edits I have been doing to keep busy in the dark cold evenings.

Peace rose, formally Rosa Madame A. Meillan’, is a well-known and successful garden rose. The cultivar has large flowers of a light yellow to cream color, slightly flushed at the petal edges with crimson-pink.
Sempervivum is a genus of about 40 species of flowering plants in the Crassulaceae family, commonly known as houseleeks. Other common names include liveforever and hen and chicks. They are succulent perennials forming mats composed of tufted leaves in rosettes.
At the time this piece was created, watch movements and cases were sold separately. A watchmaker would craft each timepiece by hand, and then wholesale his movements to jewellers, who might either fit the piece in a particular case, or, allow the customer to choose a case and watch separately. This custom has resulted in many watches which bear the name of one person or maker on the movement and a different one on the case or face of the watch. The movement of this watch is a fusee, a rare type of movement that runs not just on coiled springs, but also employs a grooved cone wound with a tiny chain, which coils around another post in a pulley system. Inspired by the winches and counter balances of the rigging of sailing ships, this method was used to refine the timekeeping of the movement by regulating the speed at which the mainspring unwinds. This movement is inscribed with the watchmakers name, Char Davidson, and home city: London. Research could provide no watchmakers registered in London around this time with the name of Davidson, however, a Charles Davidson, watchmaker was operating at this time near Dundee, Scotland. It cannot be proved, but it’s believed that this watch was made in Scotland, but inscribed with the city of sale – London – instead of the city of manufacture – Dundee. There are several reasons that this might have been done, but the most likely is simply to fetch a higher price for a piece marked with the cosmopolitan city ‘London’! This watch, like all fusee movements, is a key wind. Dates back to around 1793
